OUR CATS

We have had feral cats on the site for a number of years and whether you like cats or not, they do a good job keeping the rat and mice population under control. They are quite timid and will usually keep out of your way.

You can keep up to date with news about the cats on our blog -

I feed four feral cats on my plot every day.

 Wanda

         Keith

Calico - also known as 'Psycho'

              E.T.
These four cats wait on my plot for me and as soon as they hear my car stop, they come running towards me.  Keith and Wanda are very friendly now, and Wanda rubs herself on my leg while I get the food ready.  I stroke both of them every day while they eat.  E.T. is a bit strange.  She runs towards me, then stops and hisses a bit and then runs to the top of the plot where I feed her.  I have to be careful putting the food down because she has tried to scratch me a couple of times.  I think that she is very hungry and just can't wait.
Calico, who is now known as Psycho, continues to amuse me.  She follows me around like a little dog, never far from my side.   I might try to touch her - when I get some thick gloves!

The cats have now all been neutered, so no more kittens for them!
We are very grateful for all the help we have received from North Birmingham Cats Protection, and in particular the Welfare Officer Alan, and volunteer Jenny.

How Felix came to join us

In August 2010 we were asked by the Cats Protection if we would consider re-homing a 'tame' cat who did not like living indoors.  Felix came to join us and had to stay in a large cage until he got used to his surroundings.

When I looked in the cage one morning I had a shock to see a feral kitten next to Felix.  It had squeezed in between the bars, probably attracted by the food.

After a couple of weeks Felix was given the freedom of the site, and the kitten, named Triangle (because of the white marking on her head) has been his constant companion ever since.

Triangle

We are very grateful to North Birmingham Cats Protection for their help with our cats.  In October they arranged for Triangle to be neutered and returned to us.  Triangle is becoming a very friendly cat with people she knows and even lets us pick her up and make a fuss of her.

Shortly after Felix was released another kitten joined him and Triangle.  She looks to be a bit younger than Triangle, but we are not sure.  I named her Janet.

Janet

She is much more timid than Triangle but is gradually becoming used to us.  She was neutered in November, again with the help of Cats Protection.

Update

Sadly, we found Triangle dead in a hedge on the allotments in May 2011.  She had been hit by a car and had died from her injuries.

More sad news in November 2011 - Keith was found drowned in one of the water butts.

This was an accident which could have been prevented.  We are telling plot holders to keep their water butts covered to avoid it happening again.
